Top 30 most visited countries of the world in 2018 are named. This list also includes Russia. Where are we, and who is our ranking neighbor? 

FIVE LEADERS DO NOT CHANGE

According to the World Tourism Organization (UWNTO), in 2018, 1.4 billion people traveled around the world (+ 5.6% more than in 2017). At the same time, more than 60% of the global world tourist flow accounted for 20 countries.

France is the leader in the number of foreign tourists (93.2 million tourists, + 7.2% compared to 2017). The top 5 of the world ranking also included Spain (82.8 million + 1.2%), the USA (82.2 million, + 6.7%), China (62.9 million, + 3.6%) and Italy (62.1 million, + 6.5%.)

In the top ten countries, Turkey showed the largest dynamics of entry, which from 8th place in 2017, showing an increase of almost 22%, immediately moved to sixth position with an indicator of 45.8 million tourists. 

What can European countries and others be proud of?

Mexico came in seventh with 41.4 million tourists, Germany in eighth (38.9 million), Thailand came in ninth (38.3 million). The main loser of the top ten is Great Britain (35.1 million), which over the past year lost three positions at once, becoming only the tenth.

The second ten countries are interesting because of the presence of Russia in it. Our country took 16th place in the TOP 20 of the most visited countries in the world in 2018 with an indicator of 24.6 million foreign tourists (in 2017 – 24.39 million).

Compared to 2017, the position of the Russian Federation in the world ranking has not changed. Russia’s neighbors in the “standings” are Malaysia (15th place, 25.8 million people) and Canada (17th place, 21.2 million people).

The twenty tourist destinations with the largest number of tourists also included Japan (31.2 million) Austria (30.8 million), Greece (30.1 million), Hong Kong (China) (29.3 million), Portugal (21.2 million) ), The Netherlands (19 million) and Macau (China) (18.5 million).

WHICH COUNTRIES SHOWED THE BIGGEST GROWTH GROWTH

The largest increase in foreign arrivals was noted in the country, which is visited by few Russians and Europeans. This is Tajikistan, where the tourist flow in 2018 immediately grew by 190%: from 431 thousand in 2017 to 1.2 million people in 2018. However, this happened mainly due to the opening of the border with Uzbekistan, that is, a large part of this increase is cross-border movements, and not classical tourism.

The TOP 10 most dynamic countries in terms of tourist flow dynamics in 2018 also included Egypt (+ 36.8%) and Tunisia (+ 17.7%). Ecuador showed a 51% increase in the number of tourists, Uganda, which positions itself as the “Pearl of Africa”, recorded a 32% increase in the number of foreign travelers.

Tonga, an island state in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, added 28% to foreign tourists, another micro-state of Tuvalu with a population of 11 thousand people, recorded 35.5% more visitors. Nepal recorded an almost 25% increase, Slovenia announced an increase in the number of tourists by 23.8%.

In Vietnam, there was also a decent increase in the number of foreign guests (19.9%), which made this country one of the most visited in Southeast Asia.

Among the losers of 2018 is the United Kingdom, which compared to 2017 reduced the number of foreign arrivals by 7.4%. In Paraguay, the number of visitors decreased by 24.3%, and in Chile – by 11.3% in annual terms.

“The second dozen countries is interesting because of the presence of Russia in it. It is in 16th place among the most visited countries with an indicator of 24.6 million foreign tourists (24.4 million a year earlier),” the UNWTO data reported in the association.
Compared to the previous year, Russia’s position has not changed. Malaysia (15th place, 25.8 million people) and Canada (17th place, 21.2 million) became its neighbors in the “standings”.
In addition, the twenty most popular tourist destinations included Japan (31.2 million travelers), Austria (30.8 million), Greece (30.1 million), Hong Kong (China, 29.3 million), Portugal (21.2 million), the Netherlands (19 million) and Macau (China, 18.5 million).
