We reviewed nearly a dozen professional resume writing services based on their pricing, customer service, turnaround times, and—most importantly—the quality of their work product. Here are our top picks.

Best Overall: Let’s Eat, Grandma

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services

Let’s Eat, Grandma, (LEG) was founded by brothers Chris and Matt Villanueva in 2014. The Villanuevas realized that job searching can be one of the most stressful times of a person’s life and sought to help candidates in their search.

The company provides career advice as well as resume writing services for active job-seekers.

One of the nice things about LEG’s resume writing service is that it includes a cover letter for its Starter Package for $209.

Its Accelerated Package runs for $349 and includes everything in the Starter Package plus a LinkedIn profile review. And, if you want the Premium Package, it also includes all features of lower packages, plus a second version of your resume or cover letter, a thank-you note for recruiters, and a cold email for recruiters, all for $479.

Although the Starter Package was the second-priciest service we reviewed, the cover letter was a nice touch and made it one of the best values. Lastly, we felt the option of having a phone conversation free of charge was a nice good benefit.

We chose LEG as our best overall due to the high-quality resume that the company produced when we tested the service. Several sections of our test resume were among the best that we received from all providers we tested. Overall, LEG produced a top-quality document in a very timely fashion.

Runner-Up, Best Overall: Monster.com

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services 2

Monster.com is best known as a site where job seekers visit to apply for jobs and employers post jobs. It was founded by Jeff Taylor in 1994 and soon thereafter became the nation’s largest job board. In 2016, Monster was bought by Randstad Holding, a Netherlands-based human resources (HR) consulting giant.

In addition to its vast database of current job opportunities, Monster offers a resume writing service with three plans. Under the Basic Plan, you’ll receive a customized resume for $129.

If you want a cover letter written for you, the Deluxe plan provides one for $169. The third plan, Premier, includes a resume, cover letter, and a LinkedIn profile makeover.

And, if you’re not happy with your resume after 60 days, Monster will rewrite it free of charge. The resume writing service has a strict policy of any revisions being requested within five business days.

We chose Monster.com as our runner-up because, like Let’s Eat, Grandma, it produced a test resume that had many outstanding benefits, including great Skills and Experience sections and lots of industry-related keywords that would get picked up by an applicant tracking system (ATS).

The biggest drawbacks were that our test resume from Monster.com included some poor formatting and Monster lacks as many additional services.

Best Price: The Muse

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services 3

The Muse is a New York City-based online career platform founded in 2011 by Kathryn Minshew, Alexandra Cavoulacos, and Melissa McCreery. It prides itself on providing career advice to new generations of job-seekers.

The Muse offers three basic plans: Mentor, Coach, and Master Coach. The Mentor plan beats out Monster by $10. For $119 you’ll have the opportunity to chat with a resume writer via Skype or phone before having your resume updated by a professional.

Coach costs $225 and includes a 45-minute chat as well as two rounds of edits. Lastly, Master Coach gives you a 60-minute chat and unlimited updates for two weeks for $479. We found our writer to be more lenient when it came to revisions and rated them excellent.

We chose The Muse as our best-priced option because its rates were extremely competitive, especially given the individualized attention that was provided in each of the packages available.

Best Customer Service: TopResume

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services 4

Jeff Berger founded TopResume.com in 2014 after being around the resume writing industry for most of his life—his mother also ran a resume writing business. Since its founding, TopResume has built a team of more than 1,500 resume writers across the United States.

One nice benefit of TopResume is that you can have your resume scanned free of charge before you decide whether to have it written by a professional. If you opt to move forward, there are three plans from which to choose. Professional Growth is the entry-level package at $149.

The second plan is Career Evolution, which at $219 also includes a cover letter and a 60-day guarantee that you’ll land more interviews. Executive Priority costs $349 and includes all of the above plus a LinkedIn profile makeover.

When we tried out the service, we found our resume writer to be very responsive to our needs and they exceeded the number of revisions stated in the agreement. So that’s why we chose TopResume as having the best customer service.

But the test resume that we got back from TopResume didn’t quite meet our expectations. The quality of the document was good, but not great, as the Experience and Summary sections seemed a bit short on accomplishments.

Best Open-Source Platform: LinkedIn ProFinder

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services 5

LinkedIn ProFinder, which piloted in 2016, is more like a clearinghouse for freelancers than an actual resume writing service. The resume writers available through LinkedIn Profinder must have at least 10 recommendations in order to qualify as a provider.

In addition to resume writing, ProFinder is a great source of other types of other freelancers as well, such as graphic designers, photographers, and proofreaders.

Once you’ve submitted your request for a resume writer through ProFinder, you will receive up to five bids. We actually tried it out and it took us a couple of days, but we were able to find a freelancer who agreed to write our test resume for $145 (other writers gave us quotes as high as $545).

Our resume writer was the only one we reviewed who didn’t have a website with guarantees and certifications, which should have been a red flag.

Overall, the freelance writer we chose through LinkedIn didn’t meet our expectations. However, because ProFinder is a platform, rather than a service provider, our experience highlighted the need to vet your writer carefully when not using a designated service.

That’s also why we named LinkedIn ProFinder our best open-source option.

Best Guarantees: ZipJob

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services 6

The plans available through ZipJob are modestly priced, starting with Launch. This entry-level plan costs $139 and optimizes your resume for applicant tracking systems.

Fast Track is the next plan, at $189, and it includes a cover letter and a 60-day guarantee that you’ll land more interviews within two months. The third plan is Premium, which includes all the features of lower-priced plans, plus expedited delivery (three days) for $299.

We used this service, and while the test resume that we received from ZipJob was generally lackluster, we chose this service as the best for guarantees because it provides a 60-day guarantee that job-seekers will land more interviews within this timeframe. If that doesn’t happen, the company will review and rewrite your resume for free.

Best Resume Options: iHire

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services 7

iHire has been in business since 1999, and it specializes in helping both employers and job seekers find the right match. If you’re looking for assistance with your resume, iHire offers a tool to score your resume against jobs, a resume builder, resume critiques, and professionally written resumes.

This resume writing service makes selecting a plan fairly easy. Customers can choose based on years of experience and professional level.

If you have less than six years of experience, you use the Entry-Level Resume plan, which costs $345. The Professional Resume plan is for people who have five to 20 years of experience and costs $395.

The last option is the Professional Resume plan, which costs $495 and is designed for candidates at the executive job search level. While all of these packages are essentially the same, iHire expects that people with more years of experience will have longer resumes, so packages are priced accordingly.

We chose iHire as the best for resume options because the company makes it easy to decide which package is ideal for you based on where you are in your career.

The company also has clients complete an extensive questionnaire that helps its writers focus on the property parts of your resume to highlight. And it works. The resume writer we used from iHire wrote one of the best resumes we received.

Best for Career Resources: Knock ‘Em Dead

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services 8

If you’re looking for an industry-specific resume, Knock ‘Em Dead is the place to go. You’ll receive a resume written specific for your industry and a customized cover letter. Like most resume writing services, you start the process by defining the type of job you’re looking for.

The service then creates a draft resume for you and hones your resume until you’re satisfied. Rather than having one writer work on your resume, Knock ‘Em Dead uses two writers and a copy editor to get your resume in the best shape possible for your job search. You’ll receive a search-optimized resume in multiple formats.

The process also includes a one-hour strategy session with a New York Times bestselling author. Some resume packages also include two hours of personal job search strategy, a customized cover letter, and five hours of on-demand video job search training. Resume pricing varies depending on the type of career-based resume you need.

What Is a Resume Writing Service?

Resume writing services are companies or freelancers who help job-seekers to improve the quality of their resumes so they stand out from other candidates.

Though they all share this common goal, no two writing services are alike. They all have their own processes designed to provide clients with effective resumes with quick turnaround times and good customer service.

The services available from resume writers are also diverse and vary across plans. However, all of them are designed to help candidates land more interviews.

How Resume Writing Services Work

All resume writing services start with choosing a plan. From there, most require customers to complete a questionnaire so they can develop an understanding of what you do and where you are in your career, and find the best writer for your situation.

A good resume writer will establish contact via phone and email and take some time to review your goals and accomplishments and ask questions about your career.

The final stage is receiving your resume from the writer. Most resume writing services have strict policies about the number of edits they’ll do if you have any questions or concerns about the finished product. Some even offer a guarantee that, if you’re unhappy with your resume, you have the option of requesting further edits.

How Much Does a Resume Writing Service Cost?

The price of having a resume written from scratch or rewritten varies. The lowest price we paid was $119, while the highest was $395.

You’ll find resume writing services that will charge less and some that will charge more. The resume writing service that did the best job for us charged $209, mostly because of the resume they produced but also because it provided us with a cover letter as well.

Is Hiring a Resume Writing Service Worth the Cost?

A resume writing service is worth the cost if it provides great customer service and, most importantly, delivers a great document. However, in all of our reviews, we found the number of companies that actually do this to be relatively small. Some offered great customer service but a subpar resume, while some rewrote a strong resume but lacked in customer service.

To decide whether a resume writing service is right for you, query other job seekers in your personal network or on social networks like LinkedIn. Look at the services’ sample resumes as well.

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services

To find the best resume writing services, we started by reviewing nearly a dozen companies that are available nationwide. We then chose several to review in-depth using a test resume.

We contracted with each of these services and reviewed their offerings based on pricing, customer service, certifications, and guarantees.

After we received final test projects, we rated the quality of each section (Summary, Skills, Experience, Training, and Education) as well as the overall design and formatting.

We combined all of the ratings for these various factors to establish overall ratings for each provider and make our top picks.
